New Book Offers Alterative to Valentine Chocolate and Roses Rut
A Romantic Road Trip to a Nostalgic, Classic Movie Palace Creates a Memory to Last a Lifetime.
KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI – January 25th, 2007 -- Couples going through the motions of celebrating yet another Valentine’s Day with the obligatory box of chocolate and bouquet of roses now have a new way to find romance and adventure. Roses and Chocolate can still be part of the package, but there’s nothing like an evening at classic movie palace to rekindle romance
Mike and Vicki Walker spent all summer scouring the back roads of Missouri, Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska looking for the kind of movie theaters where generations have stolen a kiss in the balcony and fallen in love while holding hands at the picture show. Now they reveal where those theaters still make that movie magic in their new guide to classic movie theaters, Cinemental Journeys.
Over sixty theaters are featured, with pictures, maps, histories, what to do in town, not to mention poignant personal movie memories. “We saw April Love starring Pat Boone at the Orpheum Theater,” said former Missouri State Representative Bill Boucher, still happily married to his date that evening, Dee. “It was a grand old building conducive to young love.” The Orpheum still makes movie magic, as do many other theaters in the Midwest.
Authors Mike and Vicki Walker spent their 30th anniversary at the Cupola Inn, a unique bed and breakfast near Clear Lake, Iowa, an Iowa resort town and home to the Lake Theatre, where popcorn is a $1.50. After the show you can share a phosphate at the drug store just around the corner, then enjoy a romantic lakeside dinner, and end the evening dancing at the Surf Ballroom, virtually unchanged since Buddy Holly gave his last performance there in 1959.
Popular actor Ed Asner endorsed Cinemental Journeys, and recalls fond memories of his days as a boy in Kansas City Kansas. “Cinemental Journeys brings back so many good memories of our gilded palaces,” says Asner.
